ABOUT GRODNO

Grodno is one of the oldest cities of Belarus.

On the pages of its nine centuries history there is the construction of majestic temples which nowadays are the monuments of culture and architecture, and the pain from destructions and losses, and the creation for the sake of peace and prosperity.

A stone wall of the Old Castle from the times of the Grand Duke Vitovt is still remained. When you touch it you can feel that there is nothing stronger than that-the wall is blessed.

St Boris and Gleb (Kalozha) Church of the 12th century, a pearl of the ancient architecture, architectural ensemble of the monastery XVI - XVIII centuries, the Old and the New Castles, a four hundred years wooden Lehmhaus (Germ.) are not only the historical and cultural heritage, but also a tight interlacement of human destinies. Traditions and modernity have intertwined harmoniously in our city. “The Old City” is really picturesque - Gorodnitsa with preserved buildings of the theatre, Medical and Theater Schools, Administrator’s Palace and Deputy Administrator’s House. The historical center has a unique opportunity to conquer, to unite with the city over the Neman River. Grodno attracts visitors by its provincial image and amazing peace.

Narrow cobbled stone streets with old-time architectural monuments are the property of ancient Grodno. Pedestrian Sovietskaya Street with shops and small cafes, the oldest in our Republic Zoo, Ozheshko Street, under the shadow of chestnuts, with a cozy house-museum of the poetess, picturesque Soviet Square with refined in its style Farny Cathedral and the building of the Drama Theatre which fascinates with its modern design. Indelible impression is created by its main highlights – the Swiss Valley and Giliber’s Park. In the second half of the 18th century a famous scientist Jean-Emmanuel Giliber established here a unique botanical garden, which has become a real adornment of Grodno. Years passed, one epoch followed another. Today Giliber’s Park is one of those places where a man comes to step back from bustle for a moment, to collect his thoughts and just to have rest.

Thanks to the work and efforts of the people of Grodno the Park was given a second life. With great pleasure we bring here our guests, we admire its beauty and originality together. Newlyweds come here to capture the best moments of their lives and step together into happy future.

Blessed are the people of Grodno. For many years talented statesmen and scientists, writers and poets, artists and actors have lived and worked here. Prominent politician and military leader Davyd Gorodensky, legendary S. Batory, the creator of Esperanto, L. Zamenhof, painter and graphic artist, stage designer L. Bakst, writers Maksim Bogdanovich and Eliza Ozheshko and many famous countrymen brought fame and glory to the city.

Grodno is the keeper of cultural and historical values. Its 435 facilities are included to the List of Cultural Properties of Belarus.

There are the Historical and Archaeological Museum, the country's only Museum of the History of Religion , the Pharmacy Museum, the Museum of Crafts, the House-Museum of M. Bogdanovich, exhibition hall, art galleries and concert hall.

At all times, courageous people of Grodno defended the city against enemies. The Great Patriotic War was brutal and destructive. Grodno heroically stood in its destructive flame. Memorials and monuments keep the memory of brave patriots who died for the liberation of the city.

Preserving everything that was created by our predecessors, working, walking in step with modern civilization, we are confident about our future.
